The audio derives from Shane Dawson's October 11, 2019 YouTube docuseries episode "The Dangerous World of Jeffree Star," in which Jeffree Star rapidly and methodically rearranges eyeshadow test shades while Dawson reacts audibly. TikToker @jenniferlaz_1 reposted the clip on July 20, 2025, captioned "To me this was neuroscience," drawing over 3.5 million views. The lip-dub variation using the "flow state" caption emerged in early November 2025, with @realgriddyjones posting the earliest known iteration on November 11, 2025, reaching over 3.7 million views. The trend applies the psychological concept coined by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi (a state of total absorption in an activity) to trivially specific everyday scenarios for comedic effect.
